Can I get a tax refund if I have a dependent, and havent worked?

Wondering, if I can still receive the child tax credit, even if I was unemployed for the whole year.

How can you get money BACK if you haven't paid any money IN in the first place?

Did you get unemployment? If so, remember that's taxable income. If you didn't have taxes withheld from it, then chances are very good you will *owe* the IRS.

if you have no income to report you don't need to file any tax return at all

the child tax credit NOT a refund, it reduces your income tax liability, of which you have none

NO. You paid zero taxes, contributed nothing thus not entitled to refund or credits

Only if you overpaid what you owe.
