Are These Good SAT Scores...?
Hi,
I'm currently a Junior in High School and I took my first SAT I Test on December 1st, 2012.
I recently got my scores back and here they are:
Critical Reading - 550
Math - 560
Writing - 570 (Essay - 9/12)
What type of colleges do you think I'll be able to get into and how can I improve my scores?
Thanks

You should be able to get into a state university with those scores (eg San Diego State, Kansas University, University of Maine, Texas Tech, etc). These are a pretty safe bet, so long as your GPA is around a 3.0 and you don't have any disciplinary issues.
Selective Universities (such as North Carolina, Duke, Rockhurst University, etc) are probably a reach, but you could achieve them if you have high GPA, leadership skills, lots of achievements/honors, etc. You can increase your chances of getting into a university like this by retaking the SAT. Most students improve their second time around. Try taking the practice test on the College Board website, watching the SAT prep videos on khanacademy.org and googling to find strategies and other practice questions. Also, ask your English/Math teacher if they have handouts with strategies or practice tests (I got several from my teachers).
Highly selective universities (University of Chicago, MIT, Harvard, UC Berkeley etc) are probably out of reach.

First of all congrats for getting scores higher than the average SAT scores of 2012.
I think you could get into some good collages or universities, if you can find the right one's suitable for you. Maybe a City Tech college or something.

your scores are a little above averge but that will still be pretty limiting in terms of school options
improvement depends how much you want to improve. details are in the article linked below. short version is serious selfprep usually gets you about 50, self and a group class or online help usually gets you 100, private tutor usually gets 150+

So when you talk about scores yo add thrn togethet and yours should be like 1680 which is pretty decent but i recommend taking it again since there is a lot of room to improve, you cant get into higher colleges with that score.
