What mathematical formulae did whoever it was use to prove that the earth was a sphere?

I've been looking for quite some time now, but something has ****** my google up so now every time I try to click a link, it redirects me to an advertising site... So just wth did these people do to prove the earth was sphere? It's driving me up the wall.

(Obviously they did it without advanced tech, so I need a way that I can gather a bit of info, then walk outside to a suitable locaton and reproduce the same results.)

  • There were several pieces of evidence that were used to prove the earth was a sphere

    1) Lunar Eclipses. A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth passes directly between the moon and the sun. The earth's shadow is seen on the surface of the moon by observers. If the earth were flat, then it would be reasonable to assume that the shadow would sometimes be elliptical, sometimes disk-like, sometimes circular (depending on the orientation of the earth between the sun and the moon). However, the shadow is always circular, so that means that the earth must be some shape that would always project a circular shadow, i.e. a sphere

    2) The horizon. On a flat surface, the further an object is from an observer, the smaller it seems, but it is always entirely visible. However, on a curved surface, the further an object is from the observer, the less details can be seen. That is, lower points on the object will disappear behind the horizon and they'll be progressively followed by points that are higher and higher up. Think of a ship coming over the horizon. First you'd see the top of the mast, then the sails, then the remainder of the ship.

    With those kinds of observations, early thinkers were able to determine that the earth was a ball. But even with that knowledge, nobody knew how big the ball was, until a man by the name of Eratosthenes figured it out. While reading in the Library of Alexandria, he came upon a scroll that told him that in the city of Syrene about 500 miles south (obviously they didn't use the measurement of miles, it's a modern approximation) of Alexandria, the noon sun cast no shadow on the day of the summer solstice. So Eratosthenes decided to do a little test. He wanted to see if 2 equally sized sticks, placed perpendicular to the ground (straight up and down), one in Alexandria and one in Syrene would cast the same shadow at the same time. He sent an assistant to see if what he read was true and he measured the shadow on his stick at the same time. He found that there was about a 7 degree difference in the angle between the sticks and the sun. Using a little geometry, he was able to figure out the circumference of the earth to a pretty good approximation

    C = 2 * pi * r

    S = C * (d/360)

    C = circumference

    r = radius

    d = degree

    S = arclength

    500 = C * (7/360)

    500 * 360 / 7 = C

    180000 / 7 = C

    C = 25714.285714285714285714285714286

    Actual circumference: 25004.9125

    Rough difference: About 2.8%

    Not bad for some sticks and trigonometry, is it?

    EDIT:

    Technically, the other responder is (somewhat) correct. The earth is not a sphere. It is what is known as an oblate spheroid.

    The drake equation does not instruct the existence of inter galactic civilizations. It shows you the way many there could settle for assumed values on each and each of it rather is factors. all of it's bullshit with out evidence. you may desire to get the gravitational pull of each and every of the planets Earth impacts and could have the means to calculate the mass and site of Earth. once you have evidence you do no longer rather choose math, yet you will unavoidably have the means to apply math with it in regard.

    The Earth IS NOT a sphere. It's some sort of an ellipsoid.
