5 month old male kitty has dirty ears?
He had ear mites before, when he was around 10 weeks old. The problem was resolved. His ears have layers of black gunk inside them. Notice I said inside, I use rubbing alcohol and Q-tips to clean the outsides of his ears. I don't want to use a Q-tip inside his ears because I don't want to damage his hearing. The vet cleaned him last time he went, about 1 month ago. How can I clean the canal and know my way around?

You can buy ear drops made to soften ear wax. I've never had a cat with this problem that didn't have ear mites, but you might try the drops and see if they help. Most have peroxide in them. Ask your vet. Ear mites don't go away on their own, and they can come back repeatedly.

Hydrogen peroxide is good for cleaning ears and much safer than alcohol. Just pour some in. It will froth up and the cat won't like it, but the gunk will get loosened.

Use olive oil with your finger tps or on cotton balls. Then mash his ears so you can hear it all mix around. The oil will loosen up the gunk fast.
