Why was Adam Vinatieri traded to the Colts?

The Patriots went to three superbowls with Vinatieri as their kicker and also won them with his tremendous help. So why was he traded?

He wasn't traded and the Patriots I believe put a "price tag" on certain positions and they were not going to g over that threshold for a kicker. Adam V. wanted and got much more.

Purely a dollars and cents situation. I don't necessarily agree not signing arguably the most clutch kicker in history. But, the flip-side is you need to draw the line in the sand somewhere.

The Patriots didn't trade Adam Vinatieri...

After the 2005 season, the Patriots chose not to place the franchise tag on Vinatieri as they had the year before, allowing him to become a free agent. He had visited with the Green Bay Packers, but left without a contract offer. On March 22, 2006, Vinatieri signed with the Indianapolis Colts, replacing Mike Vanderjagt who was signed by the Dallas Cowboys. Vinatieri was signed to a five-year contract and received a $3.5 million signing bonus.

Vinatieri only scored a 125 FF pts last year. Bye contrast Jeff Wilkins scored 150. Yes gould is a good trade. Check out last years stats, 9 of the top 10 kickers had more pts.

He wasn't traded. He was a free agent, and went to Indy for two reasons: 1. More money, and 2. New England was prepared to draft a kicker (see Stephen Gostkowski).

he wasn't traded. he became a free-agent after the '05 season and the patriots chose not to issue the franchise tag on him. i think he wanted more money, the patriots didn't budge and they decided to let him walk away and sign with another team.

Source(s): if only vanderjagt didn't miss that field goal vs. the steelers back in the '05 playoffs...
