Help in training a Lhasa Apso mix?

we just got a Lhasa Apso for the kids for Christmas, its our first dog, and we have some questions---

we started potty training, he only peed in the house 2x since we got him on the 24th. He has been peeing outside since. (good boy) when should I expect the first poop?

How often should I bathe him?

He likes to jump on the couch, How do I get him to stop jumping on the furniture? He likes to chew on a certain pair of my flip flops. I don't care bcause they are old, but I don't want him to start on other things. How do we stop this?

He is 10 mos old.

I know there are classes out there, but they are very expensive. If you could help us, we would greatly appreciate it.

He should have pooped already. Typically dogs poop 2-3 times a day. Is he eating okay? If he continues not to poop you should have him seen by a vet he could have a blockage. You should bathe him around every 2 weeks at the maximum. Bathing too much takes the good protective oils out of the dogs skin. Give him a bath whenever he starts to get stinky or have that doggy odor.

When he jumps on the couch make him get off and sit or lay down on the floor. After he sits/lays down reward with a treat and praise. He will figure out that he is not allowed on the furnitue. Be consistent! If he isn't allowed on the couch he should not be allowed on any furniture including beds. Dogs do not generalize and know the difference. Sometimes sitting on the floor with him is good. It reinforces that the floor is a good place and he will receive attention here.

For the flip flops, its best to just keep them out of reach. Don't allow him the chance to chew on them. If he chews something you dont want him to take it away and replace it with a chew toy.

Obedience training can be done at home if you can't afford classes buy a video or book. #1 rule dogs will follow where their head goes, so when training to sit you want to move the treat from the front of the head to back behind the dogs head and he should sit. To do down move the treat directly down from under the dogs chin. You may need to gently push his butt down if he only goes into a bow. Good luck! You can always email me with any other questions!

  • Ohh my gooosh.

Where do I start on puppy training? XD

First of all, congrats to the puppy!!! :D

Second of all, congrats on putting up with it! I had such a hard time putting up with my pup, but it was worth it.

There is so much to dog training! I would probably just write a whole book on it! You can use this website. I used it for my pup and it sure helped me a lot.

Te key to training is Positive Reinforcement. I know that feeling when your pup decides to go and chew your favorite pair of shoes, and you just want to strangle them! (Not that I'd ever do that haha) If he/she is still in the act, correct it immediately. Say "No!" or "Bad Dog!" with a firm tone. NOT harsh, but firm. If the act was already done, and you come home to your best pair of shoes ruined, but your dog is still sitting nicely beside the couch, don't say "Bad dog." Dogs don't really have much of a memory. He/She will just think that you are scolding them for being nice and sitting beside the couch. Do you...kinda get what I'm saying here?

When ever my dog jumped on the couch, we would say "No! Bad pup!" then pull her off of the couch. I recommend always putting a leash on your dog around the house (you don't always have to be holding it) so that you can pull them away from bad actions. For example, whenever my dog jumped on the couch, we would gently pull her off and say "No." and if she stayed off of the couch for 5 seconds, we would reward her with treats, praise, and love.

I can't really explain potty training much, because we adopted our dog from a shelter and she was already potty trained. But every morning, we taker her out of her crate, leash her, and take her to the backyard where she can potty. While doing her business, we would say "Go potty!" and when she was done, we would reward her. Now she knows that when we point outside and say, "Go potty!" we mean do your business.

As for dog food, well lets just say that there is a lot to choose from. What you want is a PUPPY food that has-

    - chicken or beef as the first ingredient

    -NO by-products

Puppy training can be fairly easy if you know what you're doing. The dog trainer I really like is Victoria Stilwell. She uses positive reinforcement. For example, instead of pushing the dogs bottom to the ground, she wants the dog to think for itself.

That's just some training tips for a puppy. Anyways, good luck! and Congrats! :)
