What destroys a novel?

I am sure everyone (at least those who read alot) have run into a part in a book that just makes you want to scream and throw the book in the corner. For example, I don't like it when a series of books just exist to for the characters. Sure, characters are one of the most important parts, but if the plot is stupid then I put the book down.So what do you think is the worst thing an author can do to totally mess up a pretty good story.

And please no stupid answers like, "they can rip up the pages" or anything equally dumb.

Update:

Also, Throwing it in the Ocean is what I consider a stupid answer.

Wow, this is the fastest people have responded.

    I have a list:

Books that have plots that are no where NEAR realistic and hopelessly contrived. The author obviously didn't care enough making the world even the slightest bit believable, so why should I bother to read it?

Choppy. And. Short. Sentences. Like. This. For. No. Apparent. Reason.

Information dumps that have no significance to the plot.

Rhetorical questions (i.e. What should he do?). The reader is obviously going to want answers to these questions, and the burden shouldn't be on us to figure out why the character is doing something; it's the author's job to give us hints.

Teen romance (if someone could inform me of a modern day book that actually achieves this feat without terribly failing, I'd never be skeptic of anything ever again).

I could go on, but I'd probably go past the word limit.

I agree with you. Many writers are so proud that they've created "a whole new person" that they assume we should all be amazed by the "super unique 16 year old Anabelle Jakob Clarence" and completely forget that people read stories FOR THE STORIES! They usually introduce them with a ton of exposition and "information dumps" are another pet peeve of mine.

Also poor spelling and grammar. I'm not a grammar-nazi, but it has to be easily readable, no giant walls of text without any breaks or funny sentence structures.

I don't see any excuse for multiple spelling errors as spellcheck is free and available anywhere, it only takes a second.

Lastly a big dealbreaker for me is when they're talking about something or describing something INCORRECTLY without a real explanation for it, it immediately loses all realism and ruins it. Especially when it's an important piece of the plot. I'm talking about people who write a story about animals, but never bother to research the animal they're describing so they stick it on the wrong continent or give it impossible abilities. Or people who write a detective novel featuring police, but clearly haven't the foggiest idea how a legal system works. People who feature doctors or a lot of injuries without every bothering to research what would actually happen.

If any of your readers are actually educated enough to see how fake this is, you lose all ability to convince them, and a lot of the time it's just common sense too. It only takes a few minutes to research and your story is supposed very important to you. If I'm not even the one writing about it and I know that's impossible, you've lost me...

surely. whilst there's a line between delusion and certainty, the Media and Romance novels have inspired how many women and woman think of their boyfriends/husbands would desire to behave, and how their lives would desire to prove. you realize, "fortunately ever after". i ask your self whether a similar could be suggested of adult adult males and porn? Do adult adult males have raised expectancies from gazing porn? In different words, whilst some women and ladies might like if their guy regarded and behaved like a fictional character, carry out a little adult adult males think of a similar way and , like some women, surely anticipate it?

Using it to preach, either in a religious or moral way. I can't bear books where all the good people are Christians and all the bad people either get their comeuppances or convert.
