how to stop google from automatic searching?

You need to search something in Google. Then click on the little gear icon at the top right. Then select Search Settings. You will get a new page, and the second section from the top mentions Google Instant Predictions. Select the bottom answer "Never show Instant results". Then scroll to the bottom of the page and click the blue save button.

This will only last as long as you don't delete your cookies. Unless you have a Google+ account and keep it logged in.
