Do I send back a gift I don't like or use it anyway?
So my boyfriends mother of three years sends me lots of stuff.
Included was a cardigan that I really don't like at all. It does fit and it looks like something I would have liked but its also polyester and uncomfortable.
She's told me in the past if I don't like something to not feel obligated to keep it, but
She also got a bit offended when I sent back shoes that didn't fit for my birthday.
I'm completely confused if I keep it and wear it anyway or I ask her first or I send it back?
She's very nice but were not very close. She lives in Minnesota and I'm in hippy land over on the coast, what's proper procedure?

What I would do is to not send it back. Donate it to a local charity that takes in clothes such as a thrift store or facility that gives out clothes to those in need.
Since you're not close to each other geographically she need never know. And if down the road she does ask...then a little white lie can't hurt.
Something like...
Someone spilled wine on it and you could never get it clean
You washed it and without thinking stuck it in the drier and it shrank and since you didn't want it to go to waste, gave it to a smaller friend
You had it snag on a nail when looking over a friend's remodeling of their kitchen
Cat puked on it
Or if she doesn't ask for a long while simply say that it started wearing out.
Something along those lines.

No... it was really rude that you did it once & now you are contemplating doing the same thing again! The procedure is to tell her that you really loved the gift irrespective whether you did or not! And never return!
