Percy as a girl's name?

Before anyone gets upset, no I do not think Percy is appropriate as a girl's name nor would I ever seriously consider naming a human girl Percy (maybe a dog or a horse, but that's about it). But my three year old is into Thomas and Friends and every time we read a Thomas story he insists that Percy's a "her" and not a "him!" It's rather amusing, but it did get me to wondering why he seems to think Percy is a girl's name. He is old enough to understand basic gender differences (watching TV commercials he's told me that certain toys were "for girls" and insisted that boys can't play with them, although he'll also willingly play with pink toys too) and clearly knows which gender the appropriate pronoun goes with so I don't think it's just a matter of him being too young to know that there are boys' names and girls' names.

Update:

mir, Percy is a nickname for Percival, which is and always has been a boy's name since medieval times.

Update 2:

Georgia, the question, exactly, is what people think of the boy's name Percy for a girl and/or any theories as to why a three year old might think it is a feminine name. Everyone else seemed to figure that out just fine on their own.

He probably has noticed that a lot of girl names end in the /y/ sound and has generalized that to mean all names ending in /y/ are girl names.

    Pretty smart. : )

    Wishing you well.

Perhaps it's because Percy has the sound 'purse' in it, as in, a woman's purse, which might be what's confusing him. Not only that but, it's not exactly the world's most popular boy name at the moment (it's quite rare in most places), and he might just interpret Percy as feminine considering the fact that a popular theme with girl names today seem to follow an ending 'ee' pattern/sound at the end, e.g - Maisie, Daisy, Chloe, Lucy etc.

In my opinion, Percy is an inappropriate name for a girl. I absolutely agree with you.

Try something similar to Percy. These are a few I could think of:

    Perrie

    Percelia

    Pearl

    Pearly

    Hope this helps!

PS: Don't worry , your son will soon understand.

I knew a girl with the LAST name Percy, and as her first name was the ultra common Sarah, she always went by Percy, and it suited her perfectly.

I guess because it kind of sounds like "purse", he could be getting it from that.

I would say that sounds like girls names also.

Source(s): Ive never really thought of this name before and have only heard it a few times on animals. Sooo...from a new commers view I think girl first because of " purse".
