How can I update the iOS system on my ipod touch?

I hooked it up to my laptop and synched it with my itunes, but I don't think the system updated.

I need the new iOS system so I can update some of my apps. It won't let me update it without them.

Is there a way I can do it manually?

    If you have iOS 5.0 or higher

    Settings>General>Software Update then follow instructions

    If you have iOS 4.3.5 or lower then plug in to iTunes and under your device name on the left click, then click download and update on the main window.

    How to check version:Settings>General>About then look at the version slot.
