What giant dog should I get?
I want to get a giant dog (at least 100lbs). I want it to be more massive and not very lanky (like a great dane). I have had 2 golden retrievers and love their personality. So I would like to get a dog that has a similar personality and body shape as a golden retriever. I also want it to have the same style face/snout (as opposed to a bulldog or pug). I want this dog to be very affectionate towards me and stay by my side a lot. I also want him to be playful, but also be fine with relaxing at home. Basically I want a giant golden retriever.
I was thinking maybe a bernese mountain dog, st. bernard, or greater swiss mountain dog. I took a dog breed personality test and it recommended the tibetan mastiff.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would suggest a Newfoundland. One of my students had one and would occasionally bring him to see me after school - leading a little wagon! He was gigantic and yet the sweetest teddy bear of a dog you could ever imagine.
"A large dog and a true workhorse, the Newfoundland is a master at long-distance swimming and has true lifesaving instincts in the water. He is large and strong, possessing a heavy coat to protect him from icy waters. Equally at home in the water and on land, today's Newfoundland competes in conformation, obedience, agility, tracking, draft and water tests, and carting. His coat can be black, brown, gray, or white and black.
The Newfoundland's sweet disposition makes him a good fit for families. Although he appears somewhat docile, he is an active dog and will need daily exercise. Regular brushing is important to maintain his plush coat. Newfs are also an intelligent breed and are readily trained.

I don't suggest a Tibetan Mastiff they are highly defensive dogs and are often stubborn and more difficult to train. They only accept a few people in their lives and will attack anything on its territory if the owner did not give it an OK. They are great breeds but different from what you have probably experienced.

Please understand that the larger the dog, the larger the expenses. They don't say "BIG dogs BIG problems" for nothing. Giant breed dogs can suffer from many bone and growth issues, and other problems that you don't normally see in large breed dogs. My guess is, if you aren't even sure on what breed you are looking for, then you haven't researched how to care for a GIANT breed dog either.
I always say it. Research research RESEARCH. If you are serious about making the committment to a giant breed dog, do your own research, spend some time at a giant breed shelter or rescue. If you aren't sure what breed you want, then what better way to find out then spending time with them?
After you decide what breed you are looking for, do even more research on a reputable breeder and stay as far away as possible from backyard breeders.
Research about the breed, everything you possibly can. Giant breeds suffer from hip problems, bloat, joint issues. You are going to want to know everything possible to try to avoid these problems.
Read as much as you can. When you think you are ready... read some more.
