Age to rent a hotel room in Canada and method of payment?

I am 18 and my friend is 19. Neither of us have a credit card, and do not really want one. If you do pay with credit can it be a pre pay or does it have to be something like MasterCard or Visa. Do you pay with credit to hold the room and for them to keep in case of damage or can I just use debit or cash?

Age to rent a hotel room is dependant on which Province or Territory you want to rent a hotel room in. To legally enter into a contract in Canada or drink alcohol etal one must be the 'age of majority' which varies. In Quebec for example it's 18, in BC it is 19.

    Here is the Provincial breakdown:

    Alberta - 18

    British Columbia - 19

    Manitoba - 18

    New Brunswick - 19

    Newfoundland and Labrador - 19

    Northwest Territories - 19

    Nova Scotia - 19

    Nunavut - 19

    Ontario - 18

    Prince Edward Island - 18

    Quebec - 18

    Saksatchewan - 18

    Yukon Territory - 19

Hotels accept pre-paid cards to reserve a room but do not accept them as a payment method when checking in [which is rather wacked]. The only work-around is a cash deposit [which would be a few hundred dollars] or a valid card in your name; or pre-loaded [as opposed to pre-paid] card in your name.

Pre-loaded cards are the same as any other credit card as they are issued in your name; the difference being you have to put money on the card as opposed to actual 'credit'. Example:

My suggestion, contact the hotel asking about cash deposits... if they say no or it proves too costly try a different hotel.

Once you find success - book it with a pre-paid only due to the convenience factor - you won't have to go to the hotel physically eg many accept reservations online.

Then when you check-in you'll be paying cash or via debit card - the pre-paid to reserve the room won't matter any more, and the money will still be on the card [you just can't use that at the hotel but you can for everything else like eating]

    Rent Hotel Room

Renting a room is fine at 18, or 19. Most hotels require a credit card to reserve a room, but, if you just walk in and get one, you can pay cash, or debit.

18 is the age to rent a room.

The purpose of the credit card is for damages and other expenses you may have at the hotel. Some will rent for cash with a large damage deposit. Need to ask most of the better places will not do this.

    Get a regular Credit Card

You do not need to use it to pay for your room. At the end of your stay you can pay with cash or debit card. You use the card to book your room and give to front desk in case of unexpected charges.

You do not need to pay with credit card. They just want you to have one just in case.
