How long can a battery go?

My alternator is greatly overcharging my battery 17+ volts. I can't afford to get it fixed now but I'm wondering how long can my battery handle it? It's around 9 months old and so is the alternator. Car is a 1990 celica

More than likely, the problem is not the alternator, but the voltage regulator.

It is vaguely possible that the regulator is fine, but the wires from the regulator to the alternator are not right.

Voltage regulators are cheaper than alternators.

Your car might have a voltage regulator built into the alternator (call the car parts store and ask them). If so, it might be difficult to change just the voltage regulator.

If you overcharge the battery, it will boil out the acid (perhaps explode), and probably get acid all over the battery, the cables, and the battery holder (and maybe over other things, as well).

You may have to put more acid and water in the battery (they have kits with instructions in car parts stores). Some batteries can't be refilled easily (some need drilling), and some should not be refilled.

I don't think that you should find out how long your battery will handle it. It might be damaged at any time.

Not much longer it will explode don't open the hood if it explodes you will get acid burns and that will never heal, take it to a mechanic and let them fix it. tell them what is wrong. it is worth the money even if you don't have the consequence of being burns is far greater then the cost of repairing it .

    Hi

That will boil the battery dry quickly. And the fumes are explosive. And it should be popping light bulbs, etc.
