What's with the face-off in hockey?

Why does this seem to be such a production? One skater gets set in the circle, the opposing player skates around for a bit like he doesn't want to face off. Then another player gets in the circle and does the same thing, and after a bit the crowd starts to boo.

What's the conflict? Isn't there just a set of rules that should make this process simple? I don't understand the drama of the face-off.

If you actually knew hockey, you would know that you can get tossed out of the face-off for things like encroaching on the circle, too many early swipes, and other things. Then, another player must take the face-off, and if this happens to the home team (especially a star center), the crowd could get upset.

This the one place the players can try to cheat

    without being penalized if caught.
