Atheists, do you honestly think that there is no absolute right and no absolute wrong?
I realize that my question is biased. I know very well that not all atheists believe in moral relativism. However, you must admit that some do.
A friend of mine had asked a question recently about moral absolutes. He asked for anyone to provide an example of a moral absolute. There were some fairly decent answers (in my opinion). I did not fail to notice that several atheists mentioned murder as being wrong. Quite a number of people said that rape is wrong (of course, I entirely agree with that). Some mentioned that child abuse of any sort is unacceptable.
What kind of bothers me is that some- you'll notice that I said "some"- atheists did not mention murder as a universal wrong. So is rape worse than murder? I mean, from the point of view of those people, do you surmise that they consider rape to be a greater evil than murder? Of course, both rape and murder are atrocious crimes. They are the worst kind imaginable (in my view). I suppose that something is wrong with me, because I see murder as being the greater of the two evils. Don't make me out to be a villain who advocates raping people. I think that rape is a terrible, horrendous crime. It just kind of bothers me that some of those people who mentioned things like child abuse and rape did not mention murder. Of course, all of those horrific three are unconscionable crimes. I just personally see murder as the worst offense, and I do not understand how anyone could disagree with me on this.
If you believe that morality is subjective, do you deny that there are universal rights and universal wrongs? What I am specifically talking about is murder. Murder is unacceptable in all instances. Rape is unacceptable in all cases. Child abuse is unacceptable in all cases. But I personally view murder as the worst offense.
Agree? Disagree? Think I am a douchebag? Do tell.

Murder is only a universal wrong semantically.
"Murder" is the term that we apply to the killing of a human that has been determined to be "wrong", so by definition it.s wrong.
But there's no objective, universal standard by which to judge murder. What is "murder" in one time, culture or circumstance may not be "murder" in another.
It's the same with "rape"--again, we all agree that rape is wrong, because it is the precisely the label that we attach to trangressive sexual acts. However, there's no objective, universal agreement on where that line should be drawn--and it's not just "backward" societies we are talking about. There is a large, mainstream conservative group in the US that steadfastly maintains that it is impossible--impossible--for a woman to be raped by her husband. Most people would recognize that for the cack it is, but these probably otherwise decent people are adamant in their viewpoint.

Yes, all morals are subjective. There is no absolute right or wrong, good or evil. All these are related to the purposes of individuals and societies. You say that murder is always wrong, but do your morals allow for intentional killing of people to de redefined soo that there are arbitrary exceptions? Is it moral for you to murdersomeone as part of societies punishment for some crimes? Is murder moral if it is part of defending yourself, individually or as part of a war effort?
But even if I cannot think of an exception, that does not mean that some act is inherently wrong or evil. It just means that some act is detrimental for someone in every case I can imagine. We, individually and as a society decide what is right or wrong, based on our own wants (to not be killed, for instance) and out of empathy for the wants of others.

I said "some"- atheists did not mention murder as a universal wrong.
- The problem is semantics. "Murder" is wrong but killing is perfectly acceptable. The difference is that murder is killing without proper authority and since fundies believe that god is the ultimate authority he can kill as sensesly and wantonly as he wants but then all fundies who claim to be doing god's work kill as wantonly because they fell they have the authority.
both rape and murder are atrocious crimes.
- If you have the authority neither is a crime, read the bible.

Everything is relative, there are no absolutes. However, when formulating your own moral code you have to take account of what is right or wrong in the context of being a human living with other humans and animals. The easiest way to look at it is to treat people the way that you like to be treated. (unless you're a masochist of course)

There are no absolute rights and wrongs...... it is all subjective and based on the society you are in. Take your murder for example... the killing of another person.... how about during war? Is it ok at war time for soldiers to kill eachother? Hwo about to protect yourself or family? Would it then be ok to kill someone who threatened the life of your children? How about the death sentence? Ok to kill someone who has killed others? How about in the middle east where honor killings are common..... it is considered the RIGHT thing to kill someone who has dishonered your family even if such dishoner is a minor thing like looking at a boy.... See how subjective killing can be? There is no absolute.

In peoples minds some things are right and some are wrong, for Ex a person killing a animal is right for some, but wrong for a vegetarian
