10 miles to most of us here is a walk in the park - nothing. Not even a good exercise ride. "Good bikes" are found at your authorized, independent, knowledgeable, friendly, local bicycle shop. Not Wally World, K-Mart, Target & most on Amazon.com. It all depends on two words..."where & how" do you plan on riding? Read this... "Bicycles: How to Choose"

    http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/bicycle.htm...

For pure speed - get a road bike. You're looking at $700 minimum. For what you're describing a hybrid or "fitness bike" would seem right. For purely off-road, get a mountain bike. On the last two - you're looking at $450 and up.

If your heart is set on cycling - get a GOOD one from the start. Cheap bikes cost more in the long run for repairs, upgrades & overhauls. Good brands include ANYTHING found at the aforementioned local bike shop(s). Raleigh, Giant, Trek, Specialized, Marin, Cannondale, etc., etc. Even Schwinn - if found at a bike shop - not Wally World.

Why do I insist on real bicycle shop? One word can wrap it all up...quality. That & FREE after the sales service. Here's what a local bike shop near me offers... Read their service warranty.

10 miles is a fairly short ride, almost any decent bicycle will do fine for a ride of that distance

You probably mean a commuter bike. Typically it needs to be resilient, low punctures, low maintenance, comfortable, lots of gears.

Get yourself a touring bike like a Dawes Horizon, Surley Long Haul Trucker, etc

You can pick them up cheapley off ebay

    go to a bike store

    10 miles isn;t long distance

any bike would be ok for that

if you REALLY mean long distance on roads [100 miles] get a ''road bike''

I recommend getting a Trek. Although they're quite expensive ($700+), they last for ages and they're excellent riders.
