4H is for normal everyday driving on dry or wet roads. A4WD is for if the road conditions are changing and the vehicle drives in RWD but switches to 4WD if the tires slip. 4L is just for off road or if stuck in heavy snow or mud. 4L is not for fast driving.

There's no two-wheel-drive setting? Probably A4WD is the right choice for all but the most slippery conditions. I'm guessing that you have an "all-wheel-drive" system, with a lockable two-speed center differential. (It might be a good idea to find out for sure. Your regular mechanic will be able to tell you.)
Your drive-ability problems might be due to automatic hubs that have gotten stuck in the "locked" position. It happens. Again, talk to your mechanic.

You should lose some weight, then it wouldn't have to work as hard
