Dog crate for large adult pet rats?

Have anyone used a dog crate for your pet rats. If yes, any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The biggest issue would be bar spacing. Most rats should not be kept in a cage smaller than 1/2" or even 7/8" for larger rats, otherwise you are risking escapes. You can always modify it by attaching chicken wire from the outside.

Remember that you need at least two rats, and at least 2 cubic feet per rat. Rats are big on climbing, so you will need to figure out ways of attaching multiple tiers and hammocks to give them plenty of vertical climbing space.

Since the tray is so shallow, you are probably better off using fleece as bedding.

They could probably escape from a dog crate. For large rats you can get away with 1in bar spacing but I believe the spacing on dog crates is more than an inch.

If you really wanted to use a dog crate you could put hardware cloth on it.

You would also need to add a dig box or make a tray for it. You could use coroplast to make a tray but they might chew it

Adding shelves would also be a good idea.

properly without seeing the cage i could say no to the canines crate. A rat can in superb condition out any taking off that it may in superb condition that is head with the aid of..meaning a very very small taking off, they're additionally commonly used for being escape artists! As for the turtle tank i visit anticipate that could be a terrarium or an aquarium if that's the case this could be an ideal living house to your new rat. be sure the lid is a cord mesh and not glass. needs to be very preserve. I as quickly as had my rat Katie escape many many cases this style she could leap hard adequate on the ideal to knock it off then pass slowly down the stand and in lots of cases into the closet. solid luck jointly with your new chum!

Unless you're handy and can figure out how to get levels into the cage (wrapping in chicken wire is easy peasy but you might have rust issues... you can always spraypaint the chicken wire with rustoleum though, which is a safe spraypaint to use on rat stuff) I wouldn't do a dog crate. They're good for aging rats who can't have levels anymore though, so keep that in mind if you find yourself needing a one-level cage in the future. :)

a dog crate isn't ideal. the bar spacing is usually too wide, and even a large dog crate is usually too small for a pair of rats to live comfortably
