How to safely make Dulce de leche from condensed milk can?

I've heard so many different views on making dulce de leche from a can of condensed milk. Some say it's perfectly fine, easy and safe and produces great results. Others say that it's dangerous and can cause severe injuries if it explodes, not to mention the impossible clean up.

I have 2 cans of condensed milk I really want to turn into dulce de leche but I feel the boiling method is the only way I can get great results, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to risk it. Is it safe? What are some tips that can help me safely and successfully make this?

Thank you<3

I don't like to boil cans either. This is what I do and it works perfectly well: Open the cans and pour the sweetened condensed milk into a shallow baking dish. Cover it tightly with tinfoil, preheat the oven to 425F. Place the dish in a waterbath and bake about 1 hour and 15 mins. It should be the color of peanut butter when it's done. Keep putting it in 10 more minutes until it is. Then whisk it and strain it and add a tsp of vanilla extract.

It is safe as long as the can is covered at all times. Only boil one can at a time (or boil the two in separate pans). But just make sure you keep topping up the water to prevent it from exploding. Then when it has finished, take the cans out of the water and leave them to cool before opening them.

Eagle Brand and Carnation both make a caramel version of sweetened condensed milk!! Get it and make your three milk cake or whatever you wish!!

here is a recipe that calls for both the Caramele' and the Sweetened condensed milk and is super fantastic even when it is an overwhelming disaster!! just looks not like I would put on table!!!
