Why do people think vegan DIETS are extreme?

If you think the vegan DIET is extreme, (diet, NOT attitude)...please say why.

Vegans who "do it right" are not malnourished. In fact, we are often healthier because vegan diets contain almost 0 cholesterol. We consume no animal fat so arteries cannot be clogged from such things. (Heart disease is higher in those who consume a lot of meat and dairy).

We get our protein from many sources, including fake meat, quinoa, tofu, beans, legumes, and nuts to name a few. B12 is found in vitamins, and vegan ones have extra. There is nothing wrong with vitamins, I took them when I ate meat and now as a vegan. Multi-vitamins are good for health. I take only 1 per day.

So please explain @ those against vegan diets. After having read my above comments, do you STILL think vegan diets are extreme / unhealthy and if so, why?

People think it is extreme because when they imagine having a vegan diet, that means cutting out mostly everything they eat and enjoy. To them, that is just horrible!

It takes a while to completely revamp a diet and find out what works for you and what doesn't. It took me a while, but I eventually did it!

The Mayo Clinic agrees that vegan diets can be healthy for all people, as long as they educate themselves as to what they need to meet their nutritional needs (see the link below).

0 cholesterol is only desirable if you are speaking of bad cholesterol. If you eat citrus fruits, soy or olive products you are getting good cholesterol, which your body needs. Heart disease is higher if you consume a LOT of meat and dairy--an important qualifier. You imply that meat eaters are unhealthy, but many very healthy people eat meat (such as Michael Phelps, voted the healthiest athlete ever).

As for being extreme, that would depend on how people use the word. Vegans are in the minority and some people would consider that extreme. Throughout history and in many places even today, people are lucky to have whatever food they can find. In the arctic for instance, it would be hard to support a vegan diet. Mankind evolved as an omnivore, meaning they can and do eat all kinds of food.

You have every right to defend your chosen way of eating, but you won't make any friends by condemning their eating choices. You ask for understanding and acceptance, and you owe it to others to understand and accept their choices, too.

To me a vegan diet when done right is not extreme. I think a diets extreme when you are only eating one type of food for example the Adkins diet is ridiculous as is being on an all fruit diet humans cannot and should not survive without a vast variety of foods.

The only time I think veganism is extreme is when the do or die attitude is presented and like you said we are talking about the food and not the feelings.

I'm not vegan but I am vegetarian so I personally see nothing wrong with the vegan attitude. Plus we vegans and vegetarians don't eat fat filled greasy meats to get protein we eat soy. Some people just find it odd that vegans only eat a limited diet and same with vegetarians.

I don't think the (diet) is extreme, so I can answer for the ones that do. And I really don't think the vast majority of people believe the diet is extreme.

After all the questions and answers you really still don't get why most people have an attitude towards vegans? lol

a vegans diets is exclusionary so it is extreme.

doesn't make it unhealthy. that depends on the dietary wisdom and eating of the vegan.

there is ZERO social wisdom in choosing a vegan diet. that's the truly extreme part.

it's torture to go out and eat with a vegan.

Different "people" think different things. See.. I'd never eat a lamb.. But some would love a lamb for dinner... I guess people are born what they are and stick to what they thunk is a normal diet. Noone elses is an exception.
