why am i getting horrible gas mileage?

Ok.... to start of with i have a 1992 GMC sonoma with the 2.8L engine, Manual 5spd transmission. it has new air filter, oil filter, oil, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, ect. doesnt really idle rough,it runs and drives, exhaust is broken off to the rear of the CAT converter, has valve cover gasket leak (fixing that tomorrow) now to the problem. I AM GETTING THE WORST GAS MILEAGE EVER! i traded my 1997 expedition with the 5.4 for this to get BETTER gas mileage, and this thing does WAY worse! i would say it gets like 6-7 MPG. what are some fixes if any? someone please help!

Update:

to add: there is no check engine light on. oxygen sensors have been replaced. could it be bad injectors? one of the mechanics here in town told me it will never do better than 12mpg!? you have got to be kidding me! i need to improve gas mileage NOW i use this to deliver goods and i pay for my own gas! really need a good, solid answer on this, i bought a glass pack muffler to put on it today as well, so, let me know

Its a 2.8L I4 tugging around thousands of points of weight. It has more liters per cylinder than your 5.4 does. The 2.8 is overworked and with the bad exhaust you will definitely be hurting mpg.

Fix the exhaust and fix the VCG. Vacuum leaks are a huge cause of decreased mpg.

Really not sure why you would expect it to get better mpg. An overworked 2.8 trying to pull all that weight will drink more gas than a big 5.4 that has to exert almost no effort to pull that weight around. The bigger engine has to do substantially less work for a substantially shorter amount of time, whereas the 2.8 is always going to be working hard to move the truck.

Source(s): Dont trust official MPG ratings, especially before the late 2000s.

It is remotely possible that the exhaust has something to do with it but I wouldn't guarantee it. Id be a bit curious if you have a faulty O2 sensor (oxygen sensor). It may be faulty causing the engine to run rich and therefore use more gas. Do you have a check engine light on? Does you check engine light come on when you first turn on the key? It should so that you can see its working if it doesn't its quite possible that it is on and you don't know it.

I had a ninety six mannequin F150 that I purchased with 96000 miles on it and it acquired approximately 20(ish) miles consistent with gallon. It slowly however most likely stored getting worse and worse till I feel it used to be someplace round 10(ish) miles to gallon. Went to take it in for a song up at 240000 miles and for any other disorders (it stored death on me, and so forth.) and while I acquired it again I used to be informed that it used to be nonetheless going for walks at the identical manufacturing unit plugs, wires, and so forth. due to the fact that it used to be new. (marking on spark plugs or some thing) I'm definite, if it demands it, a song up would possibly not be that luxurious, however will probably be very rewarding. Mine used to be going for walks again round 20(ish) mpg. Not definite in case your's has been serviced or the what type of mileage your truck has on it, or if it has a V8 or a V6. Mine had a V8. Is it going for walks badly? Any approach, desire that is helping a bit.

Since you have bad exhaust system it is very possible the catalytic converter is plugged
