Will my dog squat while peeing after being fixed?
I have three chihuahua puppys and i was just wondering when i get them fixed will they squat or lift there leg while peeing. Im concerned because they use pee pads in house and if they start lifting there legs it could be messy and its just so cold out for them. Thank you

There is a hormone that develops in a male dog around the age of 6-7 months of age that makes them lift their leg. If they are denied that hormone, they will not lift their leg. My dog was neutered at 8 months and he lifts his leg. I too use potty pads and he never misses the pad. I have some older towels and I fold one in half and put it under the pad because the urine stream does come from a distance and therefore hits the pad with more force. The towel is a precaution from it splashing up. I have never had an accident. He doesn't pee on the walls or anything and always hits very close to the center. The towels are never wet. It's just to absorb the force. I trained him to use a potty pad when he was 8 weeks old so, he use to squat. He just adapted after he started lifting his leg. I am a big believer that a male dog should develop all of his natural hormones before getting neutered.

It really does depend upon the dog. My male dog was neutered fairly young (just before six months) and continued to squat until he was around a year and a half old...then he slowly began lifting his leg when he went. He now raises his leg to urinate every time he goes. On the other hand, I had a spayed female dog who frequently raised her leg to urinate against a bush, throughout her entire adulthood. You won't really know what habit your pups will opt for until they have matured.

Male dogs learn to lift their legs from seeing other male dogs do it. Neutering has nothing to do with it. I suggest that you get the extra large pads or just set out MORE of them.

Lifting the leg doesn't occur until they are sexually mature(marking territory age), apx 6 months and older. Provided you get them fixed before they reach sexual maturity they will most likely still squat.
