Are there dangerous subjects for Vietnamese corresponding on the Internet?
If I have an email correspondent in Vietnam, can he get in trouble if I say the wrong thing to him, and if so what are the constraints?
I had in mind the possibility of talking to him about the war which was from my time, asking how life and government work there, stuff like that. No intention of badmouthing, he's just a young feller I help with English mostly.

Me thinkst that you could get into trouble from your side, if you said the wrong things - NSA is listening.
If you avoid Vietnamese politics and related topics there shouldn't be any problems. Bad mouthing the Vietnamese authorities and their policies are a good way to get your name on a list - maybe a couple of lists, depending on how detailed NSA's records are.
There are so many things that can be discussed, avoiding possible problems should not be difficult. When in doubt, leave it out.
An example: by mentioning al-Qaeda, I have just gotten you and me both entered into the NSA tracking systems and databases.
I have chatted and e-mailed friends in Vietnam over the years, some on a fairly regular basis. I am sure that the Vietnamese authorities have noted it, but my friends have never had any problems, and I have never had any problems when I have traveled to Vietnam, which I have done a number of times.
