Are America's gun laws sufficient?

And if not, what needs to change, keeping Second Amendment rights in mind?

Best answer will go to the best justified answer, even if I disagree with it.

More could be done to make sure the mentally ill doesn't get a hold of weapons, but as far as banning firearms I'm very against that,

The vast majority of gun violence is inner-city gang shootings, if we ended the war on drugs I'm sure crime would plummet, just like when we ended alcohol prohibition crime went down.

I'm opposed to banning certain firearms based on a list of cosmetic features like pistol grips and adjustable/folding stocks, so-called "assault weapons" since rifles of any type including so-called "assault weapons" are rarely used to kill people.

    Total murders...12,996.....100.00%

    Handguns....6,009......46.24%

    Firearms (type unknown)....2,035......15.66%

    Other weapons (non-firearm, non-edged)...1,772......13.63%

    Edged weapons......1,704......13.11%

    Hands, feet, etc....745....5.73%

    Shotguns.....373.......2.87%

    Rifles......358.......2.75%

Knives are used 4.75 times more to kill people than any type of rifle including so-called "assault weapons!" Yet you don't hear about people trying to ban knives do you? Personal weapons, "Hands, feet, etc." are used twice as much to kill people than any type of rifle.

If one thinks that's banning a certain type of firearm would reduce crime, wouldn't it make a lot more sense to ban handguns, since they're used almost 50 percent of the time to murder people in America?

Not that I think those should be banned either.

Oh, and before you think I'm a conservative because I'm defending guns, I'm actually a socialist.. Implementing a mental health care program as part of a universal health care program and ending the war on drugs would do much more to reduce the amount of gun violence in this country than banning so-called "assault weapons" ever would because they are not a problem in crime.

we have tons of laws that no one enforces and I think everyone would agree that the government is not capable of protecting us in our homes so we have to have the right to do it. Every time there is a mass shooting its always in an area (i.e. school) where no guns are allowed and I can't help but wonder if that's why they picked that place. When people roll up into the police department shooting they get dropped before they can kill anyone. These shooters always kill a bunch of people because no one else around has a gun.

What if anybody close by that school at newton had have had a gun, i think we would have at least had a lot less fatalities because somebody would have been shooting at him. My family used to live in Utah and everybody had a gun and it seemed like there was no crime because everyone had a gun and they were wearing it out in the open or you could see it in the car. You have to register every time you buy a gun and pass a background check to buy one and you cannot have a concealed weopon unless you have a specific reason like your in law enforcement.

Secondly, individual citizens have to have the right to protect our selves against and unjust government or an invader. Things are okay right now but that wasn't always the case and we will loose our freedom and liberty the day we cease to be able to defend it.

In a not perfect world only the good guys would turn in their guns and we would be helpless and at the

mercy of the bad guys.Too bad we will never know if a police officer was assigned to that school how many lives could he have saved. Drugs and drunk driving have been against the law for years and that does not help.

Having a gun will not help all the time but being defenseless will never help..

We could use the money we give to countries that hate us,our children are more important!!

Isn't it better to have a gun and not need it than to need it and not have it!!

Since there is no known country with relative populations that have absolutely zero gun-related homicides and the fact the US has lower gun related deaths percentage by gun ownerships (per 100,000) compared to countries that have stricter gun laws and even bans I would definitely say "sufficient" indeed in a real world sense of the word.

Recent incidents demonstrate that our gun laws are not sufficient.

To change them, I would suggest looking at the experiences of other countries that have successfully solved the issues that we are facing, most notably the UK and Australia, which have not had mass shootings in a decade, and lower overall crime than the US. This means strictly regulating the sales of guns to those with a clear background, mental health, and need to own a weapon, stiff penalties for gun crimes, and bans on high-capacity magazines.

The Second Amendment is sufficient by itself.

The laws are sufficient, it is the loop holes that need closing. People should not be allowed to buy a gun at a gun show, without checking their background.

Right now, anyone can purchase the gun right there and then.

Supposed gun "control" laws in America do nothing more than make it more difficult for law abiding individuals to exercise their Constitutional rights. To say such a thing is efficient or deficient would be dependent upon such laws effecting actual crime in the US....and such laws have very little to do with that.

take care of? i'm worried approximately tighter gun regulations and stricter enforcement. "the blue shield is in simple terms approximately be sure a corrupt police stress."... that extensive declare would not even make experience. you recognize there are 1000's of forces around the country authentic?

How well do Gun laws work in the USA and if we need to change them?

Let’s take the Newton shooting as a key example: A 20 year-old had a couple of handguns (illegal). And, depending on the press report, had an assault weapon (illegal), automatic rifle (illegal), or machine gun (illegal). Shot his mom in the face (illegal). Stole his mom’s vehicle (illegal). Transported the gun in the vehicle (illegal) within 1,000 feet of a school (illegal). Carried it onto school property (illegal). Broke and entered (illegal). Carried a gun in a school (illegal). Discharged a firearm (illegal). Shot at people (illegal). Killed some people (illegal). Killed himself (not sure if illegal).

So tell me again what one more law will do?
