Israeli Jews please answer?
This is for Israeli Jews only, no hate please. There is a news report that Israel has opened a new school teaching people to be prophets. My question is isn't prophecy a gift? If God wants you to have the gift of prophecy, why do you need to learn it at a school. Ancient prophets didn't go to school for it.
Ok so I state again, NO NEGATIVE ATTACKS!!!

That "school" is a joke. It is run by some guy that is a Lubavitcher. Most Israeli's are not impressed in the least. I cannot remember the name of the guy who runs it and he says he is not really teaching people how to be prophets, per se, just "open up to the possibility" or some such thing as that. I can't remember. Anyway, I believe he thinks the Rebbe was Moshiach SOOO you have to take it for what it is worth. I will try to find a link about it in English.
EDIT
Cain and Able School....I forgot the name. I knew it was something really strange though. You know it is stupid when both NPR and Glenn Beck both cover it with skepticism.

If such a school exists its a cult
Mainstream Judaism is of the opinion that the era of prophecy ended a long time ago (about 350 BCE, at the beginning of the second time)
There are reasons why God ended prophecy, but no one believes that it is still possible to attain prophecy.
As for the ancients, they needed to be pious to attain the level of prophet. According to tradition, over 1 million prophets existed during the years of prophecy. Both men and women were able to achieve prophecy. Only the "main" prophets had books recorded in the Tanakh.

:) I love your question.
There is no school for prophecy in particular (unless I haven't heard about it), yet, but we definitely study about it a whole lot, along with our other studies.
Prophecy is a very deep and complicated subject, not something to be explained on y!answers. To answer your question, I can basically say that it is something you need to have both potential for, and to earn by hard work. But today, there is no prophecy. It will return in the future (and in stages).
Edit: Ancient prophets definitely learned, it didn't just "come to them" (usually), but what they learned was not how to receive prophecy, rather, what they learned were things that would *make* them *wise* and *worthy* of receiving of it.
(Moses - was the greatest prophet that ever was and ever will be, and so this doesn't apply to him. Everything about his prophecies was different.)

I think it is just jews being strayed away from their religion as much as Muslims have strayed away and christians, Buddha, Hindu you name it. As time goes by there will be false ideology and so on. I dont really know that much about jews but to me what you say really make sense. If prophecy is a gift then from god then human being have no rights to recognised other people as prophet.
