What does multiple entries mean for Visa application?

I'm visiting Vietnam for a month. The visa is asking for one month single entry or one month multiple entry. I want to make sure that single entry doesnt mean I go into Vietnam and cannot go back into USA. So do I chose multiple entry or single entry?

they're talking about entries into Vietnam. if you leave Vietnam to return to the US, that's an exit. if you want to go back and forth between Vietnam and the US that would be multiple entry.

A visa allows you to ask for admission to a country. Departing a country isn't part of the visa. Thus "single entry" does not mean you go in but can't leave.

The other answers have covered this pretty well. Here's what I'd add to Mr. Wahl's very good answer- if there's a chance you might leave during your month (maybe Hong Kong, maybe Thailand, maybe some other country very briefly), you'd be better off with a multiple-entry visa. If you go in and don't leave until the end of your visit, you'll still be fine. Generally a visa is for a long period of time, say ten years, because you don't need to stay in a country that long, just that you may want to return some time after your one-month stay. ... Take care!!

Single entry visa to Vietnam, means you can only cross over into Vietnam once.

Should you leave Vietnam, and want to return, you would have to apply for a new visa.

Multiple entry lets you enter more than one time. For example, on your trip, you might enter Vietnam, then take a short trip to Cambodia. A Vietnam multiple entry visa would allow you to return to Vietnam without applying for another visa.

The Vietnam visa ONLY applies to entering Vietnam, it does not effect your return to the USA.

    You choose single entry.

If you are going to Vietnam for one month you will not be going back to US and coming back to Vietnam again in this one month.

If your visa is lasting for 6 months or one year are you going to go to Vietnam again in this time? If so, then you tick multiple.

But i think you are going to Vietnam now for one month then maybe you will visit Vietnam next year or the year after etc. If so then you pick single entry.

Single entry means you can only enter once and when you leave the visa expires. Multiple entry means you can come and go multiple times.

Single entry is one time in and out. Multiple entry is many times in and out.

What term don't you understand, "multiple" or "entry"?

You can go in and out several times on one visa.
