Is Atheism a religion? If so should it be kept separate from state as many say other religions should?

There is no actual scientific proof that God does not exist, thus Atheists are actually on the same footing that the various Christian groups they commonly attack like Mormons, Catholics and such, and their claims that God does not exist really amount to a declaration of belief, and thus it is their religion.

So if they are a religion (though not a formally organized one) then shouldn't they be held to the same standards of the Separation of Church and State that many of them are trying to push onto the various religions in America?

Is there anyone who can give me any reason why their religious beliefs should not be held to the same standards that they try to impose onto other religions, or give me a solid explanation for why Atheism should not be considered a religion aside from the idea that there is no formal atheist churches (that I know of)?

If Atheism were to be classified a religion then to settle the separation of Church and State debate Government would really have to step back and tell people, "I am sorry but you will have to settle this debate yourself."

Additionally do you think that recognizing Atheism as a religion would help create a situation where people on both sides of this debate would have to stop and ask themselves "How can I best get my point across while still respecting others beliefs?"

Update:

Is Atheism simply the lack of belief in God, or is it a belief that God does not exist?

Especially here on Yahoo Answers I have seen Atheists actively preaching their beliefs and trying to win over converts from other faiths.

They will attack the beliefs of those who believe in God and will try to convince them that the belief in God is wrong and that their ways are better.

Tell me other than the idea of motive and method, how is that any different than Mormon Missionary or Jehovah's Witnesses missionary, or the Catholics and the crusades?

When you boil it all down then what you get is people trying to tell other people that their closely held unproven ideas are better than someone else's closely held unproven ideas.

Additionally if Atheism is simply a lack of belief in God then why do so many atheists fight those that believe in got to prove that their is no God.

If you simply lack belief in something you do not fight to keep yourself their, you simply do not care. H

Atheism certainly appears to be a philosophical religion with dogma and a cohesive life message.

It and those that practice it should be kept separate from our government.

Atheism is no more a religion than failing to believe that the world is flat is a religion. Your argument is ludicrous. I agree that many atheists mind other people's business way too much, but as far as passing laws, the only ones I've seen are for the good of everyone.

Let me tell you how keeping religion in schools can work (and this is coming from an agnostic). Keep it as cultural education, and include everyone's traditions. We talk about Jesus in our school, but we don't preach about him as if he were the messiah. We talk about Mohammed. We talk about Kwanzaa and Diwali as well. The reason for separation of Church and State is to not step on the rights of the few for the benefit of the many, and vice versa. No one should be forced to adhere to someone else's beliefs. Taking religion out of the public does not prevent you from practicing it.

Zero is a number. The Null Set is still a set.

When Atheists have shown a video of them exploring this Universe and every other Universe in the Firmament showing and proving that God does not exist...

then until then their belief is irrational. This is so because they claim science as their own, yet science does not nor can it prove Atheism to be true.

Because no spaceship can be built that is so fast that it can return from going to every square inch of this Universe and every other Universe before those who sent the spaceship into space are dead and long gone.

Those who say that Atheism is proven by science say something that has never been nor ever will be so.

Only the Creator of all Creation can reveal Himself to those whom He created...

because He is so much more intelligent and powerful than...

    those who He created.

No scientific proof god does exist. The proof that a god probably doesn't exist is contained in the science of physics. No matter what is presented to you, if you have a mindset, it won't be changed by a small thing like peer reviewed science when there's a book of hogwash to refer to.

As for atheism being a religion, that is a contradiction in terms, as the word atheist means no religion.

Not collecting stamps is not a hobby.

I have no belief in a gods. That is the one and only thing I share with other atheists.

You think there is one God, out of the thousands of gods that humans have invented.

I believe in one less god than you do. You also don't believe in Thor, like me. Is your non-Thorness a religion? You must have thousands of religions.

There is nothing else about atheism to talk about.

There may not be proof god isn't real but there is a lot of evidence to show the bible is a load of sh!t .

    1. The world isn't 4000 years old

    2. God didn't create man or atleast not in 7 days or his own image we evolved over billions of years , before you say there is no proof of evolution I've seen the skulls of our ancestors that evolved from apes to modern man have you seen gods body or ANY proof gods real. Their not the only proof there is much much more I just can't be bothered to write them all

To your question no atheism isn't a religion it shouldn't be forced on people but we should teach evolution in school not brainwash them with religion. I went to a catholic school and had to spend a few hours a week doing RE (religious education) biggest waste of time not one person in school believed in god we could have spent that time learning facts, maths,English, science or ict

Atheism is not a faith. There aren't any relevant tennants or doctrine. Even the main points of the Big Bang and the Expansion of the Universe are disputable amongst agencies of Atheism. There is not any authority determine they worship. They do not create dogmas. Calling it a faith is the present day believers try to discredit Atheist arguments: "They are too dull to observe they are in a faith whilst they bash faith, so why must we take them severe?" And you are correct, there's no clinical proof disproving God. But what you are doing is known as "relocating the goalposts." If you are saying you will have an invisible God that exists in an extra measurement, there is no such thing as a strategy to disprove it. Or end up it for that topic. But the Abrahamic God was once given characteristics that may be disproved with technology, historical past, archeology, or even with the identical scriptures that quantify it. So no, we cannot disprove A god, however we CAN disprove YOUR God. In conjunction together with your "relocating the goalposts," you're looking to characteristic any reference or definition of the phrase "God" with the "Christian God" with out utilizing as many phrases. That's known as "inspiration preventing." You are a propagandist and absolutely a cultist.
