You can't just pick THE best champagne because different ones taste different to different people. I've drank lots of different champagnes in my life and the most expensive are not always the best.
You might ask him what he likes. Maybe not directly. 'Do you like dry wines or sweeter wines?' Or even 'How much wine have you drunk in your life? Do you like wine?' If he's not an experienced drinker, sweet is better than dry. Dry champagne is really an acquired taste. (I think). In fact a $300 bottle of any kind of wine is really a waste for an inexperienced drinker. He wouldn't be able to appreciate it. (_I_ probably wouldn't!)
I have two tips.
(1) Dom Perignon is the ORIGINAL champagne. So at least it's the real thing. 8^) Dom Perignon was a monk who is credited with inventing champagne. The legend goes that he went down to the cellar and tasted some wine that had accidently undergone 'secondary fermentation' so it was effervescent. He ran up the stairs yelling 'Brothers! Come quick! I'm drinking STARS!' 8^)
And (2) If you want to save some money, get a bottle of Asti Spumanti. There are many brands, of which I think Martini is the best known and most available. EVERYONE loves Asti Spumanti. It's basically the Italian version of champagne--a little sweeter, a little fruitier.

I always like an Asti because it is a bit sweeter, Martini Rossi because it is affordable and good. if you want to spend hundreds well then sure lol you can find better but it runs around 10.00 a bottle

Why would you spend $300 on champagne for a 21year old when you don't even know what he likes!???!?!
My favorite is gran Spumante and it is about $8 a bottle.

Try not drinking at all, it'll do your liver a lot of good.
