These are really sad

Midori Days Puella Magi Madoka Magica (plot may be very unhappy when its published) Shiki (kinda sad) an extra Mirrai Nikki (kinda) Sankarea (kinda) one other series thats very unhappy but has initial horror/gore for roughly 15 episodes out of 60 episodes, is Higurashi no naku 1 + 2, and Umineko:once they cry. This sequence is at first horror but turns into a psychological thriller series after 15 episodes or so. Its an awfully sad difficulty they are all in, however the sequence is A+

Elfen Lied is pretty sad. I have also heard that they Key series animes are pretty sad, especially Air, although I have not yet seen them but plan too.

i totally agree with clannad, also there is fruits basket, gunslinger girl, and elfen lied.
