Christians, Is There a Specific Scripture that Says Gambling is a Sin?
I am a Christian, have been for years, and I pay my tithes and pray. However, for the past 2 years, I have been laid off from work and actively looking for work, but without any success. My unemployment has run out, and although God has been supplying my needs and I am grateful, I am still scraping by and sometimes I want to play the lottery or go to the casino. Just want to know the truth - if I do these things, am I sinning? Serious replies only please.

It must be noted that the Holy Scriptures do not directly mention gambling. This does not mean, however, that we are left with no direction on the matter. Instead of issuing rules governing every activity or situation, the Bible urges us to “go on perceiving what the will of Jehovah is.” (Ephesians 5:17)
Since gambling involves betting on uncertainties, belief in luck—a mysterious force that supposedly controls random events—plays a large role, especially when money is wagered. For example, auspicious numbers are chosen for lottery tickets; the uttering of certain words is forbidden among superstitious mah-jongg players; and a puff of air is blown over dice before they are thrown. Why? Gamblers often believe that luck will, or at least might, influence the outcome.
Is it merely a harmless game to put one’s trust in luck? Some people in ancient Israel felt that way. They believed that luck could bring them prosperity. How did Jehovah God feel about the matter? Through his prophet Isaiah, God told them: “You men are those leaving Jehovah, those forgetting my holy mountain, those setting in order a table for the god of Good Luck and those filling up mixed wine for the god of Destiny.” (Isaiah 65:11) In God’s eyes, belief in luck is a form of idolatry and is not compatible with true worship. It reflects trust in an imaginary force rather than in the true God. There is no reason to believe that God has changed his view

I commend you for relying on God up to this point. The bible does not directly state that gambling is wrong, This does not mean that we are left with no direction on the matter. Since gambling involves betting on uncertainties, belief in luck often plays a role in gambling, Isaiah 65:11 - In God's eyes, belief in luck is a form of idolatry and it is not compatible with true worship. It reflects trust in an imaginary force rather than in the true God. When you gamble you are hoping to take a little money and turn it into a windfall with one stroke of the right numbers. That is contrary to the Bibles counsel at Ephesians 4:28 " Encourages us to be hard workers" Since any money awarded has been won, not earned or obtained as a return for work done or services rendered, gambling is not legitimate work. Our Creator has promised at Matthew 6:33 that if we "keep seeking the kingdom" that he will provide all the things we need. You have said that he has provided for your needs. His help has proven to be certain. I would hope that you would continue to show reliance on the Creator,

You claim to be a Christian, yet you are ignorant about a number of basic things.
If you read Acts 15, you will notice that it is a subversion of a Christian's soul to teach them old covenant points of law. Tithing is an old covenant law, and applying it to Christians violates all the rules of proper interpretation of Scripture.
Secondly, a Christian is defined as being dead to sin and freed from sin. So here you are worrying about whether or not something is a sin or not. If it were, you being a Christian, you would know, or make the decision for yourself. In relation to Christians, it is written that whatever is not of faith is sin, therefore if you are not sure, then you should not do it.

If the Bible reported every sin that was wrong you would have a book ten times what it is now. Yet gambling is a sin because you are trusting in that act than in God's providing for you. The point is who are you trusting completely in? There is only one way to be 100 percent faithful that is 100 percent - it is not 99.9% 99.5% etc.

it shows a lack of faith in God IMO.
And relying on a piece of paper to make you "rich" is borderline idol worship.
Just my 2 cents.
You have to figure how the bible would apply to TODAY...Obviously it's not going to say directly "don't buy a lotto ticket from 7-11"
