CSS Profile or FAFSA?

Do college applicants need to apply for CSS or FAFSA, or both? This is really confusing to me, because some colleges seem to require both…?

    do both

    FAFSA is for financial aid from federal and all colleges use it

    but CSS is for private colleges only
