Let A,B and C be points on a number line with respective coordinates a,b,c such as a<b<c. If b=6, AC=30, and BC=@AB, then what are the coordinates of a and c

    BC + AB would have to equal AC and since BC is twice AB, you know BC is 20 and AB is 10.

    So 20 up from 6 is 26 (that's c), and 10 down from 6 is -4 (that's a).

    AC = 30, point b is a point between points a and c.

    If BC = 2AB, then BC = 20 and AB = 10, to give you 30, and still satisfy the equality.

    However, b = 6 makes no sense at all because you said b is a coordinate, but you provided a length for b.

    Okay, thank you for your edit. I wasn't aware of the diagram.

    In that case a is a coordinate to the left of b and c is a coordinate to the a right of b.

    AC = 30

    AB = 10

    BC = 20

    If b is 6, then a must be at -4 to make AB = 10.

    If a is -4, then c must be at 26 to make AC = 30.

    a => -4

    c => 26
