Why doesn't Yahoo Answers update the "best answer" percentages?
I've noticed that my "best answer" percentage on Yahoo Answers has stayed the same (46%) for over two years, despite the fact that if you calculate my number of "best answers" to date from the graph on my profile against the total number of responses I am actually at 54% and have been at that level or higher for quite a while.
Not that I care one way or another but it just strikes me as odd that a site that makes such a big deal out of quantifying responses can't get that to periodically recalculate.
Out of a total of 7570 answers my stats are 4080 chosen as "best" which is nearly 54%, not 46%. Percentage is calculated by dividing by the total or 4080/7570.
Aha, I see the problem. The way the stats are displayed is confusing. The number at left which seems to relate to "best" answers is actually where they have set the bar for "other" non-best answers. Kind of a dumb format but I understand it now.
Yeah, I understand the concept of there being little movement in percentages once you have thousands of responses behind you. I could limit my answers to "sure things" but, as I said, I don't care about the percentage and just post answers when I feel like I have something useful to contribute. Often I just tell the questioner to give the points to somebody else who has already given the best answer. And I admit that my "bests" are often because I am the ONLY person who answered an obscure question.
Anyway, got the answer to my query now. Duh.

Having worked out the % problem brings up something else to consider which is quite remarkable it means you are doing exactly the same amount od work now as you were doing two years ago.
Mine was stuck at about 19% for several years and I was give a couple of tips and it rose up to my current level.
The % have never worried me either, I am just in the same rut as you if that is what you call it.

Not sure where you are getting YOUR numbers from, but the YA numbers are correct:
3490 / 7470 = 46%
The more questions you have answered, the harder it is to drive up your BA%. It took me a very concerted effort to push mine from 59% to 60%. I did it by being very selective in what I answer, so my odds of getting a Best Answer were better.
So, you actually need to get a much HIGHER percentage of Best Answers for an extended time, to drive your BA% up just a fraction of a percentage. This becomes even more evident when you have thousands of answers.

You are misreading the graph. The 4080 is at the top and refers to "other" not "best". Hover over the graph and you will see best is 3490 and other is 4080.
