How much do you write?

I try to as much as possible and everyday if possible. With my little nephews and nieces running around all day it gets a little hard to write.

    That's a vague question...

I've been writing fiction, on and off, since I was about 8 or 9. About 10 years ago, I decided to try to make a career out of it, and told myself I'd write every day, even if it was only a sentence (and often it was only a sentence!). A few years after that, I decided I'd write 3,500 words a week, which averages 500 a day. Sometimes I manage it, sometimes I don't...

As for how much I *have* written... about 1.4 million words of fiction. I've completed six novels (seventh one nearly done) and have three other novels that might or might not get finished. I've also written some short film scripts and a couple of serials that were broadcast on student radio when I was at university.

    Per day?

The amount is absolutely variable. It depends on everything from my mood and my motivation, to whatever I have to do that day (and, by extension, how much time I have to write), to even the temperature of the room (ever tried writing in 46 degrees celsius? Not easy. Or fun).

Sometimes nothing at all, or only a sentence or two. Usually, though, I get about 1000 to 2000 words in a solid session.

Today and yesterday, I had cleared my schedule for two "writing days". I stayed at home, strapped myself to the computer and knocked out as much of the story as I could. Yesterday I got 11,000 words done, which is less than you would expect from a whole day, really. Today, it's 9:45PM and I've only done - let me check my document - just under 5,500. I was in a distinctly different writing mood today than yesterday, obviously.

A few months ago I was really excited about the part I was writing, and knocked out 16,000 words in an afternoon. That's probably my limit, before my head starts to fade and I need to get away from the computer.

So it changes a lot, and I sometimes give myself big boosts. But I tend to find that the more I write in any given session, the worse my writing is, and the more editing it needs. 1000 to 2000 is a comfortable block for me. I don't see it as a race.

Me personally? I have been writing for over 15 years free hand and using a computer. I write at least twelve thousand words a day.

I've written over three hundred short stories, thirty essays, five hundred poems, and ten novella. Plus, I write my own name at least four times a day.

It all depends on how much you like to write. How much do you write?

All the time! I love writing. As for working on my novels, it's a wonder they ever get finished because I am the Queen of Procrastination. However, I have been working on writing every day.
