Why is a Green Lantern affected by gas?

I just watched Justice League episode 1-3 and John Stewart was nearly knocked out/killed by gas that penetrated his shield sphere. That just doesn't seem right to me.

The GLs can fly in space and deep sea without trouble, but poison gas affects them? How? It's not like they breathe it in.

The ring is operated with will-power. It does what the wearer tells it to. In space (no air) the wearer protects themselves with an air tight shield (which probably recycles Oxygen). In planetary atmospheres they probably do not (maybe they prefer fresh air).

You probably notice that their shields usually allow light and sound through, also. That also leaves them vulnerable to some light and sound attacks.
