Was the US founded as a Christian nation?

Congress set December 18, 1777, as a day of thanksgiving on which the American people "may express the grateful feelings of their hearts and consecrate themselves to the service of their divine benefactor" and on which they might "join the penitent confession of their manifold sins . . . that it may please God, through the merits of Jesus Christ, mercifully to forgive and blot them out of remembrance." Congress also recommends that Americans petition God "to prosper the means of religion for the promotion and enlargement of that kingdom which consisteth in righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.'"

I don't know. I do know we would be better off if the majority was. Who cares what they thought back then. We need God's help NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

many of the people who founded and led the united states were deists, some were even actual born again christians, but all the wording of the declaration for thanksgiving observances proves is that those who recommened to congress that december 18th 1777 be observed as a day of thanksgiving were either deists or christians.

the language of the proposal sounds christian as it mentions sin being blotted out by Jesus Christ and it also mentions the Holy Ghost.

but that does not mean that the entire nation was a christian nation. people were much more religious in those time than there are now and so it would not be unusual to find references to God and even Christ in their words, but the proof of a born again life is not what words are said as much as it is what sort of lifestyle the person (s) live and there were precious few of the founding fathers who lived holy and godly lives. they drank and smoked and fornicated with women other than their wives, they conspired and lied to further their own causes, and many were members of secret societies all of which is totaly contrary to scriptural christianity.

absolutely not. our country was founded on FREEDOM OF RELIGION and by extension... FREEDOM *FROM* RELIGION!!!

christianity insinuated itself into every aspect of our lives for centuries before we beat it back to where it belongs... in the churches and homes.

THERE ARE NO CHAINS ON THE CHURCH DOORS. go there are worship all you want. not happy with no prayer in school??? then get up off your LAZY fahking @ss and pray with your kid in the morning, teach them how to pray silently at lunch and get down on your fahking knees and pray with them at night. that's YOUR JOB not the job of this country or the schools.

let's not forget that the constitution actually stated that a slave was counted as 3/5ths of a HUMAN BEING, that they were PROPERTY that had to be returned it their OWNER if they escaped. and of course some of the signers of the constitution and some presidents actually OWNED slaves.

this just PROVES the point that there *may* have been a few *mistakes* that we have now CORRECTED.

so NO we are no more of a christian nation than we are a slave owning nation.

It is impossible for any nation to be a Christian nation. The reason why is because true Christians look to Christ's ruling kingdom in heaven to solve problems, which the Bible says it will do in the near future. In fact, Daniel 2:44 makes it clear that human governments stand in opposition to God's kingdom through his Son Christ Jesus. It says that God's kingdom will destroy human governments and it itself will act as the sole theocratic government for the entire earth. (Compare Revelation 16:14, 16).

This explains why Christ Jesus withdrew from the people who were coming to make him king. (John 6:14, 15) If a man like Jesus Christ lived today, wouldn't it be logically to make him President -someone who was superlatively wise, could heal the sick, raise the dead, and feed the hungry? Of course it would make sense, and it made sense in the first century, too. However, Jesus knew that his purpose on the earth was not to rule human governments, but to teach people how to acceptably worship and draw close to his Father in the heavens. He was also sent to serve mankind and give his life as a ransom to buy back what Adam lost out on. - Matthew 20:28; Romans 5:10, 11.

Now that Christ is King of God's kingdom, he has invited the nations to submit themselves to his superior rule, but they refuse. (Psalm 2:8, 12) Instead, these human governments choose to hold on to their power in vain, choosing, in essence, to be ruled by the Devil, the invisible force behind human governments. (Matthew 4:8-10; 2 Corinthians 4:4; John 12:31; 14:30) This explains why the following things are taking place in the US and around the world: Immorality , government-backed genocide and other forms of terrorism, red tape that keeps the needy from being helped, inflated egos who refuse to admit when there is a problem, war, abortions, slavery, and prostitution of adults and children. These things are so rampant in different lands because, again, the Devil is the ruler of this system. But the good news is that his rule is short lived. Soon God's kingdom will step in and make everything right, as was already mentioned.

Since God's Kingdom will soon destroy all human governments, none of them can be said to be a Christian nation. Most of the members of the US government or the citizens may claim to be Christians, but Jesus Christ said that it isn't important how people see themselves, but rather how he sees them. (Matthew 7:21-23) He said that in order for us as individuals to be recognized as his followers, we must do the will of his Father in the heavens. Most professed Christians are not doing that. They either are unrepentantly doing or agreeing with things that the Bible condemns outright, and such ones who will be included in suffering the wrath that all nations will suffer. -Matthew 7:13, 14.

The government of the United States of America is, in no sense, founded on the Christian religion.

Treaty of Tripoli, Article 11. Ratified unanimously by the senate and signed by founding father and second president, John Adams, in 1797.

The claims for a Christian nation are a desire to destroy democracy and install a Christian dictatorship!

Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is NOT, in ANY sense, founded on the Christian religion, (Emphasis added)

Treaty of Tripoli, ratified by the Congress, singed by Pres. John Adams.

Note, as well, the utter lack of any religious specification in the Constitution.

    That was the CONTINENTAL Congress.

It is not the same as today's Congress.

It is not the same as the Congress that founded the USA.

If they had wanted a theocracy, don't you think they would have said so?

"The United States is in no way founded on the Christian religion"

-Treaty of Tripoli, signed by President Adams and unanimously ratified by Congress.

Maybe you should've paid more attention in history class.

    NO.

The founding fathers were deists. Had they been around today, many of them would probably be atheists.

The first amendment, the writings of T Jefferson, and the Treaty of Tripoli are evidence of the secular foundations of the US government.

    treaty of tripoli

As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,—as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen [Muslims],—and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan [Mohammedan] nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.
