    Stanley Miller and Harold Urey, in 1952, synthesized organic molecules (amino acids) from inorganic ones using an electrical spark (to simulate lightning). They wanted to recreate conditions that would have been present on the early Earth. They performed their experiment at the Univ of Chicago.

    The hypothesis was originally proposed by A. Oparin and J. Haldane.
