Have you tried to read the game scores in a chess book written in Russian?

There are many untranslated inexpensive Russian language chess books on eBay. Some titles look very interesting. I wonder if the game scores can be understood by someone who has no knowledge of Russian. Has anyone with no knowledge of Russian tried it? Or do you know of web sites where the score sheets for the games are written in Russian so I can see what they look like?

Fischer learned enough Russian to read certain books that had not been translated at that time. I make no claim to being anything like that. I am just curious.

Yes, I have several Russian books in my chess library. Russian game scores from recent books are easy to read - they use figurine algebraic just like anyone else. Older works also use algebraic notation (the Russians used algebraic notation when the West was still entrenched in Descriptive Notation) but with Russian letters for the pieces:

    King is "Kp"

Queen is "ф" like the Greek letter phi, an oval with a vertical line through it

    Rook is "Л "

    Bishop is "C"

    Knight is "S"

You don't need pawn in algebraic notation; its symbol "П" is the same as the Rook without the little hook on the first vertical. With a little practice, it's easy to remember that Kp e1 is our Ke1, ф c2 is our Qc2, etc.

If I found a book of games I wanted, I sure wouldn't let the Russian put me off. Now translating text or annotations, that's a different matter! Below is one site that charts the English/Cyrillic alphabets.

exciting. the appropriate answer relies upon on issues merely like this sort of tale, the characters in contact and how the story is instructed. it extremely is probably risk-free to assert that merely describing a pastime of chess as though it extremely is merely a pastime of chess would be particularly uninteresting for many readers! and not part of the story extremely besides. As with the rest on your tale, the chess-pastime scene might desire to make a contribution to employing the story forward. for this reason, it would contain issues that make a contribution to quite a number of of: character being printed, plot moving forward, etc. as an example, the way a guy or woman performs the sport might desire to demonstrate that they are reckless, or cool below rigidity. One threat is that the define of the sport-play gives you a metaphor for something happening interior the story, something no longer in any different case expressed. as an example, the language used to describe the chess-strikes might desire to be oriented around hazard or violence or confusion. plenty relies upon on what viewpoint(s) you have. In some varieties of tale, you may desire to even write concerning the chess-pastime from the attitude of one or greater of the products! in one action picture, a chess pastime is used to tutor the sexual rigidity between the guy and the female. They stare upon one yet another plenty and he or she fondles the bishop! it is merely a sprint on the numerous opportunities for you. merely you may verify. maximum heavily, what you write might desire to be comprehensible to the reader, an quintessential part of the story, and make a contribution to moving the story forwards.
