Why are people reluctant to divulge their bank account details?

I often ask somebody for the name and number of their bank account so I can pay them by Internet, and they refuse. How could this information be abused? And what's the difference from paying by cheque, since the cheque carries the same information?

Update:

To make purchases in your name they'd need to know your PIN number.

Divulging your mobile phone number or bank details can enabkle people to steal money from you e.g. by making bogus purchases. Even giving your real name can be dangerous.

If you are paying me, you don't have a copy of my check. You would only have the bank info on a check if I paid you.

There are all sorts of scams out there where people ask for bank info. It's a huge red flag. Stop asking people for bank info. You don't need it to pay them.
