Cleaning shower enclosure glass.?
My shower enclosure glass is badly marked by lime scale, possibly the surface has been etched. I have tried all of the following with no marked effect. Lime Lite, Harpic, Cif, the Silly Bang stuff, Gel Kilrock, Vim, Shower Clear and various kettle descalers. Does any one have any ideas. I have a power, polishing mop if polishing compound will be necessary, but afraid of damaging surface if not correctly done. If anyone has sucessfully dealt with same problem, advice will be much appreciated.
Many thanks for all your sensible answers. Having tried some, I am now convinced that the glass which was originally perfectly clear does not have a coating of lime scale, but has become etched in a streaky pattern during the period of use. I am now awaiting delivery of a polishing kit for use with a power tool. If this does not work, I will etch the whole surface.

Sorry to hear about the problem. It sounds like you have proved to yourself the glass is not going to come clean, no matter what variety of cleaner you use. What you have encountered is not a deposit ON the surface; it's an erosion FROM the surface. So, what to do?
Replacing the glass may be worth considering, especially if it's easily removable from its mounting. Sometimes, acrylics are an even better option. Keep in mind, though, you don't want anything to constitute a safety hazard due to shattering potential. Except in Hitchcock movies, shower stall violence is still rather uncommon.
Here's my idea for you, for what it's worth. Etch the whole glass! Yes, get some etching compound or creme; something like this:
http://factorydirectcraft.com/catalog/products/130...
Prices are probably better in your local hobby/craft store, and there are many alternative brands.
Etching the whole glass will give you a neat, spiffy appearance, and totally conceal the ugly blemishes that are bothering you.
Further, the etching project will give you (and your family) an opportunity to be artsy by contributing stencils of your own design and making. I would envision soccer ball size "snowflakes," but the options are completely unlimited. Cut them out of contact paper, stick them down before you apply the etching compound, and peel them off once the compound has done its work. This could be fun for the kids.
Something else to try: take an abrasive to the whole of the surface, blemishes and all. This would be steel wool with a lot of muscle behind it, or medium grit sand paper with similar bearing pressure. This is something to try first, perhaps. If you're not pleased with the outcome, you can still etch the whole thing and cover up the abrasive scratchings.
I hope you find something satisfactory. Good luck with the project!

Look if you are 100% sure that the glass WAS clear glass originally then I am puzzled as to how this scale has attached itself in such a manner that none of these products have had no effect, not that I agree with you choice of things you have tried !
Provided, as you say, this is limescale, then I would take a new unused stanley blade out of a packet or the body of the knife and holding it flat against the face of the glass but at an angle, move it over the surface where the limescale is to see if it removes it. If you are careful there is no reason why it should scratch the glass as you are not using the point of the blade. This and single edged safety razor blades are used in the same manner within the glass trade and are commonly used to clear gunk, adhesives and the likes off the face of glass during various processes. It will glide more easily over the area you are working on if you dampen the area with a solution of soapy water first or even white spirits and keep it lubricated whilst working.
If this doesn't work then nothing will ! You have either glass that was etched deliberately by the manufacturer as a modesty panel of glass or it's been permanently damaged beyond repair and you will have to replace it or live with it as it is.
As an after thought there are DIY films that can be applied to the outer face of the glass that will greatly disguise what's going on in the inside and are available to buy from E-bay....look for etched glass film.

I clean glass shower doors with bath oil. This works well. I don't know about the marble, but you could just put a towel down and make sure no oil runs off. Good luck.

Hi
It might have been mentioned earlier but I would try with vinegar or bleach:
1. Apply clear vinegar to affected areas and clean with scouring pad (yellow sponge type with green pad).
2. If no joy with vinegar, try smearing the glass with good quality thick bleach and clean with scouring pad.
Hope you have some success.
