How effective is Rosetta Stone?

I want to learn a few different languages, I have nothing better to do so why not, so I'm downloading a couple language packs. Is the program as good as the commercials say, or is it just good advertising?

    Hello,

Not as good as it says. The biggest complaint is that it waters down the grammar to next to nil and grammar, though hard and tricky is the keystone for mastering any language. You'll mimic and parrot phrases, say simple things but not have intelligent conversation let alone conduct businee meetings in that language down the road.

Here are two critiques to consider:

Do you have any idea just how long it takes to learn only one language? Give it 10 years of daily exposure and a lot of hard work to become pretty good. I am sure Rosetta stone is a very good learning tool. However do not believe the T.V. commercials. There is no magic or fast way to learn any language. It does not have to cost much money but it will cost an awful lot of time and devotion.

I would say they are just good advertising. Learning a new language isn't that easy, let alone learning mostly by yourself. The easiness relies on how close it is to your native language.
