How much do computer programmers make?

My 17 year old niece decided not be an actress after all. She doesn't like how Hollywood is becoming. She now says that she want to become a computer programmer. She said that they make a lot. But I'm not so sure. So, how much do they make at least a month? And how much a year? Thanks.

It varies. Someone just entering the field might make $40000/year, top-notch programmers make about $100000/year. To get a better salary than that, a programmer has to go into management or entrepreneurship.

It really depends on experience, education, and skill. Entry level programmers with a bachelor's degree in computer science can make $60,000 - $70,000 a year. Seasoned programmers can make over $100,000 fairly easily.

It is a very in-demand field, but also very challenging. Especially for Computer Science degree programs, they require extensive amounts of math. It is also, in my opinion, not a very fun job (staring at a computer all day writing code without much outside interaction). To each their own, but it doesn't sound like a job that someone who was once considering being an actor would enjoy.

Trust me, you don't do this job for the money. If you don't honestly like Computer Programming, you will be miserable, and for the same amount of mental effort involved, you could be making a lot more money in other professions. How much you actually make depends on what type of programmer you become. Your salary ranges between $30k and $120.

If a programmer is working on a project which is main product of the company, he is called engineer.

If a programmer is working on a project which is NOT part of main product of the company, he is just a programmer. And that's a big difference.

I would say 30k is really low-balling it. You can expect 50k+ for sure if you aren't taking the rattiest job out there. Computer science is a very tough major (I'm in my senior year of my degree, trust me). That's quite the switch of career path as well. She better be good at math and problem solving. Programming takes a lot of algorithmic intelligence as well as creativity. I got straight As in math and I find computer science very difficult.

She won't start at the numbers you are seeing above. Those are the averages taking into account the new programmers and those near retirement.

She would need to get her 4-year degree, which will put her into debt, but would be able to start anywhere between $30k - $50k with pretty steady growth annually if she performs well.

That would depend entirely on which of the hundreds of different types of programming she wanted to do.
