Its for protection from the harsh cold weather that Asia has, and from the sunlight reflecting brightly off of the snow... Evolution. If you don't know What evolution is its the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms

I remember reading many years ago, that to this date (or to that date), scientists could not explain that for sure...
And while I'm not an evolutionary geneticist, I was going to say the opposite of Jonathan... Or that this probably wasn't because of the sun as we could feel tempted to say, since Africans are exposed to more intense light, and did not develop this characteristic...

i imagine you should get your nationalities appropriate before you ask your question...you're pertaining to Manga-form animation, that is eastern. And, certain, they are well-known for feeling underconfident about their seems. a lot of them sense that the perfect is to be caucasian and hence have operations to make their eyes a lot less "slanty"...unhappy yet real. that is a shame because a lot of eastern ladies are finished honeys (not so prepared on the adult men, regardless of the actuality that- they merely look like ladies, all hairless and small and smooth..brrr!!)

Actually east Asian eyes are better developed than others'. It's one more step evolution. It can protect their eyes from dust wind.

No one is 100% sure why many Asian people have thin eyes. but as of now, our biggest theory is that it is from squinting a lot. Because so many of them were farmers for generations and generations, they ended up squinting to keep the sun out of their eyes. And over thousands of years, their eyes have slowly changed shape.
