How long on average do Gardina Plants live?

When speaking of plants "life span" is not usually used. We talk about average life spans for trees because they can become dangerous in decline, and difficult to remove due to their size. But, shrubs, even large ones are given only vague periods such as decades. The tern perennial applies to any plant that lives more than 2 years.

40 years is a long time for any plant, and since gardenias have fairly specific limits of what they will tolerate you must live in an area that favors the plant. Still, if this plant is in decline due to its age, and not just the odd weather so many have experienced, you might want to take cuttings to ensure a replacement. I have a gardenia tree that my children and I planted on the first anniversary of their father's death. That was 18 years ago. It had been doing very well until the last two years. Now it looks as if half the tree is dead. I live in Florida and we had some cold winters a few years back but I covered the tree over night each cold night and we never had a frost. I have had bud drop the last couple years. I have put coffee grounds on it, pickle juice and we have had lots of rain this year. I fertilize it three times a year. I don't know what else to do.

WOW!! Congratulations. And condolences. I don't believe I've ever seen info on gardenia life span. Being a woody plant, it has it's limits.
