Why Japanese claimed Okinawa belong to them?

Basically "Ryukyu" Islands is the so called "Okinawa" by the Japanese today. It was once Ryukyu Kingdom, and It seek for protection from Empire of China to defeat Japanese islanders for a long time long before the 1600s, Because they fear for the Japanese islanders might invade them somehow. During the Japanese invasions between 1600s-1900s, The island was never officially occupied and claimed by Japan. Somehow, After WWII Ryukyu was "Returned" to Japan by the U.S without authority... So I guess here is a big question mark. What makes the Japanese think They own the island today? Did they officially sign any agreement with the Emperor of Ryukyu kingdom back then?

Its the same thing as Japan is never officially occupied by the US now. Japan has been in effective control of it since the 17th century.
