how do you format text to date in excel 2010?

I am having a problem converting to a date format in Excel 2010. When I converted my data from a previous version of excel it assigned a numerical value to all my dates. Now I can't change them back. Can anyone help me?

Update:

Thanks. I tried that but it keeps going right back to text.

Sometimes when a date is converted into a number it won't change back again. You said you've already tried highlighting the cells/column and selecting Date as a format, so try this.

Insert a column next to your date column. If your dates are in column A, insert a new column between A & B. If cell A2 is your first date, in cell B2 enter this formula

    =A2

Copy and paste this down as needed.

Now select column B and change that format to Date. If you want to get rid of your original date column (col A), highlight column B and copy. Right click and select Paste Special and select values. Then hit enter to paste the data. That will change your output from a formula to the value of that cell. Rename the header for column B to match column A and delete column A. You now have your dates back. Should only take a minute to do.

I tried this and it worked on my version of Excel 2010.
