Social Security Disability : Does rental income affect your ssdi?

would rental income or any gain from rental income affect your SSDI payments. As it is not an earned wage and seems to be passive income I would be guessing no but I thought I would put it out there.

1.) Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is not need-based; therefore, in most cases, rental income will not affect the dollar amount of benefits. The rental income, along with the amount of the SSDI benefits and other income will help determine whether your SSDI benefits are taxable in part or in whole by the IRS at year end.

2.) While the rental income itself does not affect your SSDI benefits dollar amount, any work you do to maintain or improve the rental properties may be used to determine whether you are still disabled and qualify to receive benefits. The Social Security Administration may determine you are well enough to resume your chosen career.

Your other income and assets have no relation to what your SSDI benefit amount is. It is based solely on your previous earnings and SS tax contribution.

No. Only earning from wages or self-employment counts. You are required to report if you work for an employer or as self employed and you are required to report if you receive worker's comp. Rental income is not wages or self-employment. Only if you are in the business of buying and selling real estate does it become self-employment or wages.

However as someone else stated the work you do to maintain the rental income WILL be considered when they do the next medical review.

According to an attorney friend of mine, yes. However, you need to make sure YOU do not do anything to improve the property. If any work needs to be done, have the property manger take care of it... stay out of it..
