What can cause a computer to not be able to host a minecraft server outside the LAN?
I have a computer I would like to set up a minecraft server on and I cannot let my friend on once it is set up. It works if the other computer is on the same network, but, it will not work on another network. We have hi-speed internet, so I don't think the speed is the problem. What can I do to diagnose and fix this?

LAN stands for Local Area Network. It will only work if you are on the same Local network.
However...
You can use Hamachi... it basically allows people to "connect" to a Local Area Network that you host your server on, making it just like they are on the same network.
If you want to host a Minecraft server online, you must download the Minecraft Server from the MC site, set your computer's IP to static, and port forward. Guide is in the source. Good luck.
