We lie to ourselves about the true cost of war. Americans don't realize that fully half the cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will be in taking care of damaged vets for the next 50 years. We don't 'support the troops' once the war is over, they've served their purpose, we want them to just disappear. This was true in Vietnam too, in fact as far back as Korea.
The Iraq and Afghanistan wars were even worse. The Bush admin. didn't even want to suggest what these wars were going to cost. They refused even to put them on the budget, instead relying on a series of 'emergency' spending bills to hide the cost. Bush didn't count the cost of continuing care for disabled vets because that would come later, when he was out of office.
The money we send all over the world (you mean foreign aid, right?) is not charity. It's in our own self-interest. Generally we tell the other countries what they need to spend it on, and they have to spend it with a big American corporation, so it can really be seen as just another corporate subsidy. It's not a huge part of the budget anyway.

I believe that for the most part, they do. The VA scandal of late is due only to incompetnece in the people they hire. Many bucks are paid to people "just because", and without regard to their ability to do a decent job. The money is there, we only are missing careful and meaningful oversight of the system.

That would cost trillions and we all know how socialist healthcare is bad. The free market will take care of the problem..

We should be grateful not all of the Hollywood elitists spit on them after they did in previous wars. Some still do, but not all
